Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of clots in the large veins in the legs and pelvis. Clots in these veins can cause permanent damage to the legs or can travel to the lungs causing a life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism. In some cases, DVT can be treated with a special medication injected into the vein to break up the clot. The clot can then be removed through a catheter with suction. In patients who are not able to have blood thinning medications, we are able to place a metal filter within the large vein (the inferior vena cava) leading to the heart and lungs to protect the lungs from any clot that may travel through the veins.
