Peripheral vascular disease refers to treatment of the peripheral
arteries which are the arteries supplying the arms and legs.
The most common symptom of peripheral vascular disease is
a deep pain in the muscle brought on by exercise. This pain
is called claudication and can be severe enough to limit activity
such as walking or going up stairs. In its more severe forms
peripheral vascular disease can be associated with non-healing
skin sores or even gangrene if left untreated.
Treatment for PVD can require surgery, arteriography, angioplasty
(dilating blood vessel with balloon), vascular stents or a
combination of any or all of these treatments. At RVA we offer
the full spectrum of these treatments. Because our physicians
have no incentive to select one treatment over the other,
we will provide you with the best option of therapy performed
by the specialist most qualified to provide it.
