The leading cause of stroke and transient ischemic attack
(TIA) is carotid artery disease (CAD). Although carotid endarterectomy
has been the treatment of choice to remove plaque from the
carotid artery of patients with stenosis (blockage), a revolutionary
alternative that we offer called carotid angioplasty has become
very popular in the United States over the past several years.
Carotid angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that
involves the placement of a balloon catheter and a vascular
stent in the narrowed portion of the carotid artery in order
to dilate it. The procedure is performed in an interventional
radiologic angiographic suite with local anesthesia and minimal
sedation.
